The work of Gil Heitor Cortesão has this ability to make us roam, wander through assorted layers made from stories of art, literature and reality itself. Everything here is an illusion. The relationship between nature and architecture, painting and photography, History and fiction, all fit in the reading of this work. In the end, there is an image that imposes itself: that of a tree that appears in a polyptych entitled « Casa do Alto », emphasised in a dry landscape, made almost entirely of soil. Our urgent task is to return home. We walked a lot to get here. That tree, a stone pine, is that dwelling that we always return to, no matter how harsh nature is. And that place has a name of its own: painting.
